Yes you can, but only with a MyRepublic Static IPv4 add-on.
Due to the global shortage of IPv4 addresses, MyRepublic uses private dynamic IP, or dynamically assigned private IP addresses. This means that the IP address assigned to your location can change every now and then.
Although this does not impact your internet experience such as streaming, surfing, P2P downloading or gaming, your computer would not be accessible from other locations without a public static IP address.
If you are looking to host services such as Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, locally controlled IP cameras or FTP servers, please refer to our Static IP add-on.
- IP addresses under the IPv4 or version 4 internet protocol, use 12 digits. This allows for 4.3 billion addresses, of which 3.7 billion of them are usable.
- Although that seems like a very big number, the reality is that because IP addresses are crucial for everyone’s internet communication across the globe, we are running out of IPv4 addresses to use. Millions can be used up in a month alone.
- As a result, newer Internet Service Providers are forced to be more discretionary in offering customers a IPv4 addresses. This is why MyRepublic uses private dynamic IP, with a Network Address Translation (NAT) service allowing customers to share a IPv4 address.
- The next-to-be adopted internet standard of IPv6 comes with 39 digits, allowing for an almost unlimited number of addresses. Unfortunately, for IPv6 to be deployed successfully, all content and servers on the internet would need to support IPv6, which will take a few years.
